For power generating purposes, water from the Tugela River is circulated between the Upper Driekloof Dam and the Lower Kilburn Dam, by means of a 4.5KM waterway. The 4 reversible pump turbines, situated 52 storeys below ground level, generate 1000MW for the Eskom National Grid. The power station is also part of the Tugela-Vaal Scheme, which supplies water to the Gauteng area. Water from the Tugela River, pumped into the Driekloof Dam, overflows into the Sterkfontein Dam. Tours are at 10h00 and 14h00 Mondays to Thursdays, and at 10h00 only on Fridays. Free of charge (arrange own transport).
